What's the origin of the Battle Royale genre?

Because of the recent success of PUBG I got thinking about where this whole genre started.I remember playing a Minecraft mod called Hunger Games (later renamed Survival Games) that was the first implementation of this concept I have seen. I think around that time DayZ also got started.However I'm wondering if there's anything before that.
