Mafia III: Can great atmosphere overshadow bad gameplay and level design?

I recently picked this game up and it made me think about som things. The atmosphere in his game is fantastic. The music, characters, visual environments and a great attention to details all come together just fine. the main characters are all well writen and very likable in their own way, the main character might come across as a little bit bland in comparission with Father James, Donovan or Vito Scaletta. On the other hand, the quest design is nohing but dreadful, before setting out on a "real" story mission, you have to complete a number of open world quest that are pretty much the same quest over and over again. The main story missions are well made and engaging though, but getting there is a grind and a real pain! Same hing goes for the open world itself, finding an interesting place filled with members of a rival faction gives no real reward because the enemies respawn when the open world quest activates!Have you played other games with similar issues: great atmosphere but bad/boring gameplay? Do you think a good atmosphere can "carry" an otherwise bad or even mediocre game? via /r/Games https://ift.tt/2pSqIxB
