How does a 144hz display exceed 144fps?

I saw this youtube tech review video where they reviewed this laptop with a 144hz display and they can get more than 200fps on certain games. But if the display is 144hz, isn't the maximum framerate of the laptop going to be 144fps? How does it exceed that limit then? via /r/tech https://ift.tt/3kLQQp2
